For many, traveling to Norway or Iceland to witness the famous Northern Lights might seem unattainable. However, those in Singapore will soon have the opportunity to experience something similar.

Gardens by the Bay will soon host an art installation called Borealis, which replicates the visual and atmospheric elements of the Northern Lights by combining layers of light and cloud particles to illuminate the night skies of Supertree Grove. Accompanied by a soundtrack from French composer Guillaume Desbois, this promises to be a surreal experience right in sunny Singapore.

Created by artist Dan Acher based in Switzerland, Borealis has been showcased in various cities worldwide, including Seoul and Birmingham, drawing large crowds who have been highly impressed. One visitor described it as “amazing and unforgettable.”

Borealis has travelled to more than 40 cities across Europe, Australia, Asia and the US, and the experience at Gardens by the Bay will mark its first time in Singapore.

According to Acher’s website, Borealis is both an artistic creation and a technological marvel. The interplay of light beams and particle clouds creates the illusion, but the outcome is unpredictable due to variations in wind, humidity, and temperature. Nature ultimately dictates the final display.

It will join the staple line-up of night activities at Supertree Grove, such as the nightly Garden Rhapsody light and sound show.
