Singapore to Welcome New Prime Minister on 15 May
Singapore is preparing for a significant leadership change, as Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is set to assume the role of Prime Minister on May 15. The transition, announced by the Prime Minister’s Office on April 15, marks a pivotal moment in Singapore’s planned shift from its third-generation to fourth-generation political team.
Upon his swearing-in at 8 pm on May 15 at the Istana, DPM Wong will become Singapore’s fourth prime minister. Reflecting on his unexpected journey into politics and impending responsibility, DPM Wong expressed humility and a deep sense of duty in a video message. He pledged to serve the country with dedication and to prioritize the aspirations and concerns of its people.
DPM Wong’s prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic, as co-chair of the multi-ministry task force, contributed to his selection as the presumptive next prime minister.
Under his leadership, the fourth-generation team, known as 4G, aims to strengthen bonds among Singaporeans and navigate economic restructuring amid global challenges. Their agenda includes fostering national resilience through sports, arts, and philanthropy.
PM Lee Hsien Loong, who has served as prime minister for 20 years, expressed confidence in DPM Wong and the 4G team, urging Singaporeans to support them in creating a brighter future. As PM Lee prepares to step down, he remains committed to assisting his successor and ensuring Singapore’s continued success.
