Guide to Haw Par Villa, Singapore’s Otherworldly Attraction
Haw Par Villa is one of Singapore’s quirkiest attractions and a must-visit when in the country. This offbeat but informative park is known for statues depicting scenes from legends and myths that combine elements of Buddhism, Taoism, Chinese history and mythology.
In 1937, entrepreneur and philanthropist Aw Boon Haw built this sprawling eight-acre outdoor art park beside the sea. You can also thank him for introducing Tiger Balm to the world, a staple in every Singaporean household.
Over the years, Haw Par Villa has undergone many changes and, with continuous improvements, has become a popular destination for locals and visitors alike.
Here are some of the highlights:
Visit Hell’s Museum
While Hell’s Museum might send shivers down the spines of younger visitors, it’s a fascinating exploration of death and its significance across various cultures, culminating in the infamous Ten Courts of Hell.
Don’t let the fiery imagery deter you—the museum’s fully air-conditioned! Graphic depictions showcase the consequences of misdeeds, from filial disobedience to lying—a stark reminder to reap what you sow. Rude to your parents or elders? Be prepared to get your heart cut out from your body. Tickets are reasonable: $20 for adults and $10 for children.
Walk Around The Park
Beyond the underworldly thrills, Haw Par Villa allows you to wander through the park and encounter a menagerie of sculptures and dioramas. Witness the peculiar union of a rat and rabbit at their wedding, or marvel at the prowess of sumo wrestlers frozen in mid-bout.
Alternatively, you can go on one of their recommended trails. Footsteps to Enlightenment is a self-guided trail that allows you to discover all the major Buddhist elements around the park. If you’re up for a challenge, the Zodiac Hunt is a fun way to explore. There are over a thousand sculptures around, but the Zodiac only has twelve animals, good luck!
For those IG-worthy photos, Hop! Par Villa is another trail that will take you to all the curated photo spots. Lastly, there’s the Journey of the “long” lost dragon trail. From 1998 to 1995, Haw Par Villa was once known as Dragon World, with a huge dragon sculpture at the entrance. Although that dragon has been removed, many small dragons are around, and this trail will take you to them!
Other Activities
Haw Par Villa isn’t just about quirky sculptures. The park hosts exhibitions throughout the year that delve into Singapore’s rich cultural heritage and legendary tales. Check their website for upcoming events and workshops that pique your interest.
Take a break at Art Journey, a one-of-a-kind cafe and art jamming studio. Grab a coffee and some delectable cakes and take a breather after walking through the park. Kids can also join their mosaic art jamming activity, a fun way to spend quality time as a family.
